The 2 Reasons Why You’re Struggling
There are 2 reasons why your business is not where you want it to be.
- You don’t know what to do.
- You’re not doing what you know to do.
But first a little story…
About 100 men file into the meeting room.
They were all foremen for a mechanical contractor in Los Angeles.
ACCO, one of the largest air conditioning contractors on the West Coast, does well over a billion dollars of business each year in the construction and maintenance industries.
One day, they had had enough.
They call all of their foremen in, from off the jobs, to come into the central office in Glendale. We show up wondering what the hell is going on.
We gather in the meeting room to see what emergency has come up that we all needed to be pulled off of our jobs.
Up to the podium walks a short crusty curmudgeon of a man. By his presence, you know he’s been in the trade for a while and that he knows his shit.
But none of us know who the hell he is.
Is the company being sold?
Are we, like so many other companies, under new leadership?
He tells us is name is Fred. He’s been involved in the building trades for over 30 years and that he’s been invited to speak to us on how to be more effective leaders and foremen.
But why am I telling you this and why should you care?
And what does construction have to do with your business?
The $100,000 Investment
For ACCO, to call all of their foremen into the shop for, a business leadership training was no small event.
Each foreman costs the company about $80/hour. Also, while we sat in a meeting instead of being on the job, meant that they were having a loss of productivity on the job sites.
More money lost.
That was how important this business training was to the company.
Fred covered a number of topics during the workshop:
- Personality temperaments and communications styles
- Goal setting and proper preparation
- The importance of documentation and tracking
But, the most important topic was the two reasons why employees are not working effectively:
- He does not know how to do his task
- He does not want to do his task
So, it is in any business where people are being managed.
And as a business owner, it is no different for you.
Whether you’re a solo entrepreneur wearing many hats, just getting started.
Or, you’re a bit more ahead of the curve, running a small group of employees.
But, if you are not happy with where your business is, look to one of these two issues.
If that is the case, Being a Black Belt of Business is for you.
Building a Business the Black Belt Way
You started a business because,
- you want to be more happy
- you want your life to have more meaning
- you want to do more, have more and be more,
But it often feels to be out of reach…
You dream of having a successful thriving business:
- doing the work you love with people you love working with
- having your calendar filled with paying customers
- making a positive difference in the world
But, that dream has yet to happen.
You’ve read business books, blogs, and taken business training workshops. But the pieces don’t seem to fit together.
With everything you’ve tried, nothing seems to take traction.
You’re struggling and worry that your dream is just that, a dream. It will never be a reality.
Not Knowing What to Do
We know what you’re going through.
We’ve been there ourselves.
What we learned is you can’t build a business slapping it together with duct tape. Patching shit together, you end up with a big clump of glued crap.
But that is what most of the business training is out there.
Try a little of this. Try a little of that.
Months later, you end up with a wadded up ball of junk.
There’s a Better Way
You build a business by consistently learning and applying new skills.
But which skills and when?
You don’t build a business like a patchwork quilt. Not sure what goes where hoping it will come out fine in the end.
That’s a waste of your valuable time and energy.
To build a successful business, you need to take the right actions at right time for your business
The Trick to Kicking Your Business Back into Shape
In martial arts, nobody walks onto the mat as a black belt, they all start as a beginner, a white belt.
A white belt learns very basic skills. Sometimes, even needing to unlearn.
In yoga, the student learns how to properly align the body to allow the energy to flow. Actually, to unlearn the poor posture which prevented energy to flow properly in the first place.
But you do that one small step at a time, making sure to have the prerequisite skill in place before moving on to more difficult steps.
An instructor does not challenge his student with tasks that she is not ready for.
He helps her to overcome the basic challenges, then by building up her confidence and ability to tackle bigger challenges.
In the same way, business training doesn’t do you any good if it’s just slapped together in a hodge-podge of mismatched steps.

Not Doing What Needs to be Done
But you might know what you need to be doing and you’re still not doing it.
You’re feeling overwhelmed, confused and even a little bit afraid. (Maybe scared shitless!)
Starting a business is tough.
But you don’t have to make it harder than it needs to be.
In fact, the more difficult you make it, the less your chance is for success,.You’ll be exhausted and quit.
And no one is standing over you, making sure you do your work.
You’re not doing the things that need to get done and you’re floundering, stuck in quicksand.
But, it’s not your fault.
You’re just not working in tune with your flow.

Go with the Flow
In martial arts, we use the analogy of water to learn how to be in flow.
Water flows effortlessly. The harder something pushes against water, it just moves out of the way. When it collects and builds up enough pressure, it breaks through any obstacle. But it does it easily, naturally, and never forced.
In martial arts, we call that natural flow, Tao.
The Path. The Road. The Way.
- learning how to wait for the exact moment where just a little bit of effort creates huge results
- knowing what to do, when and where
- allowing momentum to work for you and not against you
Tao is what allows a 120-pound woman to easily and effortlessly subdue a much larger man.
Tao is what will allow you to tackle the beast, that is your business, flowing freely around obstacles and coming out the other side, victorious.
Put It On the Mat

The two are inextricably linked.
Make a decision. What do you want?
